Although the art of acting or music has been acknowledged in early times, the act of theatre directing
has not been very long in the industry of performing arts. In fact, it only emerged as a really directing
performance program in the later part of the 20th century. In the 1970s to 1980s, there had already
been training programs for directors although most of these were related with vocational courses.
Most of the directors back then got informal education about their job while they were already doing
it. During the present time, many schools in Europe have professional training in line with theatre
directing, which can be seen in universities, drama schools and conservatoires. Assistant directors
are now hired and trained at the same time. Aspirants can now attend lectures on the Royal National
Theatre in London and get one year training in the Donmar Warehouse.
