Historical plays are focused on relating actual events that have happened in history. This can either be a tragedy or a comedy, depending on what really happened. However, it is not classified in the two because it is somewhat actual and true. The history as a separate genre was characterized by Shakespeare in his plays.

Unlike the other kinds of play, the tragedy is not meant to be funny. As the name suggests, it is geared towards sadness and often concludes with a sad note. It often focuses with a good person who in the end turns up with a bad hand and is pushed to have a bad fate. There are no happy endings in this kind of play. Instead, the play uses all kinds of emotions and uses heavy conflicts with lose—lose situation.

A satirical play may have an overall comic look that tackles current events. Famous people are also included in this kind of play, mostly tackling issues related with politics and society. Corruption is one of the popular themes of a satirical play. No matter how serious the topic is, satirical plays present it in a way that is easy to understand and has an underlying tone of sarcasm and humor.

A farce is an overreacted play wherein nonsensical things happen. This can also be described as a surreal comedy wherein the strangeness is beyond relief. An example of a farce involves talking animals that have been transformed into people but have retained their thinking and behavior. When put in the world of the humans, their antics may be quite hilarious to the point of getting overboard.

There are different genres in a theatre play. These are the comedy, farce, satirical, tragedy and historical genres. As the name implies, a comedy is a kind of play that is humorous. In a comedy, witty remarks, eccentric and unusual characters and weird happenings are essential. The director gets to decide the targeted age group which it will focus on. The comedy is half of the two original types of plays in Ancient Greece, the other being tragedy.
